Slowretail has recently founded it’s own group at the online-network-platform XING.

The slowretail-group addresses customers, traders, producers, manufacturers, real estate people, city-governments, individuals - who believe in different retail-worlds co-existing with uninspired mainstream reality. Who know about the chances for profit generated by creativity, not just with “fast moving consumer goods” and discount concepts.

slowretail & art - series, part 1

Since a few days the silentpark website is online, founded by the brandnew hamburg-based Silentpark GmbH. Temporary photo-artists now have a professional platform to present and sell their art.

After starting silentpark as an e-commerce-shop only, the founders Marc Peters, ex dot.com-manager und Oliver Wuensche, advertising art director, plan the expansion already: Showrooms will be opened at the most interesting German retail spots. They are searching for matching locations already, hints are welcome and can be given to the editor.

Currently silentpark lists a dozen fresh artists, each of those offers some limited editions. The Photos may be ordered solo oder framed, both promised to arrive in top-quality.

Seibstock Delicatessen in Merano, Italy.

In the old cities of southern Tyrol (Italy) the historic shopping street is often called Lauben (ital.: Portici) characterized by it’s typical arcades. In Merano Seibstock found it’s place in this street more than 100 years ago:

The gardener at Trautmannsdorf Castle, Johann Seibstock, got permission to open a market-stand in Merano in 1890. 1904 this has been developed into a grocery, herb and coal store…

Until today the customer enters the store through the century aged hazelnut-wooden door. And he finds a fine delicatessen-store as well as - sometimes - personally one of the two Seibstock-Brothers in third generation of management, who explains their vision to keep this store growing both in tradition and space.

Recently the store was carefully renovated, italian designed light drops enlight the lardos, hams and cheeses, oils balsamici, jams and honeys, pasta and pestos. And the sortiment is extraordinary: Pasta is added by glass noodles and couscous, Grappa by Calvados and Cognac, so one finds not just italian food.

The ”giornalista per una gazetta tedesca ’slowretail’”, this is how I have been introduced to the very serious storemanager in the store, gets to know by the owner, that the 15th century-basement will be opened to public within the next weeks. And the first floor is supposed to become a seated deli one day… we’ll stay tuned!

Manufactum in Cologne.

Today Manufactum opens it’s store in the city of Cologne, Germany. More than 1.000 sqm space provide the major part of the company’s catalogue-sortiment and a big food department.

Manufactum took place at 1920’s ‘Disch-Haus’, a former office building from architect Bruno Paul, originally built for an insurance company in ‘Neue Sachlichkeit‘-style after the building has just been carefully reconstructed. Neighbour is the Kolumba, a new museum for religious art, recently built by contemporary swiss star archictect Peter Zumthor and the dialogue of both buildings develop the quarter in the (hidden) heart of cologne to a architectural ‘must-see’-area.

Manufactum follows it’s own style of interieur design, using wood, steel and linoleum. There are interesting spots in the store - better: departmentstore - for “the good things”: Stationary next to classic tweed coats, famous Bauhaus-style lamps opposite the food area…

Manufactum waited some years for this fabulous location to be available, there is still some retail space left next door, waiting for sustainable entrepenuers…

A “day of sustainability” will take place at beautiful Weinstrasse-Region in central Germany on May 29th, 2008.

Lots of information about sustainable trading and products will be provided, workshops and discussions about the future of handcrafting and innovative retail strategies (e.g. the Slowretail-idea and concept stores) will be open for every visitor.

During the day there are different speaches, discussions and workshops, featuring the most experienced heads of sustainabiliy and “LOHAS“-scene in Germany. The day is co-organized by Die Zunft AG.
At the end of the day a “mercato del gusto” will take place as well, powered by Slowfood-Partners, winers, etc.

Gorilla in Berlin.

Gorilla Naturally Fastfood in Berlin has just opened it’s fourth store: In the hype district around Oranienburger Strasse, at Friedrichstrasse 120.

Organic, delicious and beautiful.

Gorilla already exists since two years, the first place in Berlin-Charlottenburg owns the status of being the “first mover” in organic fastfood. Here one get’s organic, vegetarian food which is creative and different.

The most important products are Salads, Soups and Sandwiches plus drinks (e.g. Bionade). An exclusive food-creation is the pan-salad which is served warm, based on ginger, mustard or tomato. Just organic and certified ingredients, of course.

The Gorilla will grow fast within the next months and build nests allover Germany. He currently looks for matching locations. The next Gorilla will open in Berlin-Mitte again, just across the street of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin’s capital. And the Gorilla catering is famous already e.g. as an innovative meatfree business-lunch.

A concept store for Zollverein.

Die Zunft AG (translated “The Guild, Inc.”), which has been mentioned here already, is getting real: Being part of Unesco Word Heritage, one of the preserved halls of Zeche Zollverein in Essen, Germany, is changed into the Zunft[werk] Concept Store.

Starting 2009, the Die Zunft AG will establish showrooms, manufacturer-shops and event-space on about 1.200 sqm. The hall is located at the central court of the former mining area.

The Slow Food-community is offering food and drinks, the manufactured, high quality products are presented in a Concept Store way. The conceptioners are highly interested in innovative customer’s experience and sustainable values. Potencial partners and exhibitors are welcome and can get in touch to the Zunft people here. The Zunft[werk] Concept Store is both first real place of the Zunft community and preview for the planned Zunft[viertel], which will be realized at Zeche Zollverein until 2011.

The former Zeche Zollverein is already home of e.g. the Red Dot Museum and the frequently discussed Zollverein School . From 2009, the Ruhrmuseum will be moved here from another location in Essen. The amazing Bauhaus-architecture pulls about 500.000 visitors to Zollverein in Essen.

At Hamburg’s Central Station recently opened Mutterland - an ambitious food store with a neo-ecological concept.

Owner Jan Schawe, who is experienced with restaurants already and lives close to the new store, missed the right food store (for himself) in the quarter and created his owm. The district St. Georg is well-known for it’s drug-scene, gay-headquarter role and red-light environment. On the other hand the high street “Lange Reihe” is already expensive to live at and the worn jeans are often designer labeled..

Therefore the Mutterland store seems to be too high-class in this neighbourhood. The products are chosen with lots of taste, some are quite expensive. There are lot’s of delicious, organic and fair traded things offered. The “branding” is professional, it’s a beautiful modern store in a tough surrounding.

Impressive is also the building, where Mutterland is tenant: The classical Bieberhaus, just renovated, built in 1909. It has been planned as a hotel first and hosted different users over the years. Who want’s to become neighbour of Mutterland, can currently still rent some space.

Everyone has exact 1.000 cm³ retail space: at designe, kleine!, a tiny store in Frankfurt’s hip shopping district Sachsenhausen, designers rent boxes of that size to present their products monthly.

The store location in the triangle Bruecken-, Schul- and Schifferstrasse is surrounded by different types of lifestyle stores, a walk in the quartier is more and more worth a trip. The highlight of ’designe, kleine!’ are 40 wall-boxes, filled with a strange mixture of small products .

There are bags and accessories, handmade candle-holders, many innovative design-products, some jewelry, too. And CD-covers, wallpapers, wall-tatoos… After the store has closed, the world’s smallest Concept Store offers things outside - in an automat, 4,00 Euro each.
